Roadtrip began as a video experiment between the two front seats of my Ford Escort on the cross-continental trip that moved me from the west to the east coast during the summer of 1998. Twelve hours of video documentation through the states turned into a 15 minute video score that back-dropped the dance extravaganza.
As the piece was meant to really go over the top, as a farce or even comedic experience, the more elements to encounter, the better. I found an enormous Russian symphony with several cohesive yet episodic sections; a costume concept that gradually progressed from the mundane white t-shirts and jeans to the loudly colored, hippy-style that illustrated a feeling of freedom as the piece progressed; and what started out as six turned into 32 truck tires dancing around the stage with the dancers.
The theory of a roadtrip as a dance is really the same as the actual experience: A starting point, a not necessarily pre-determined destination and one rule that basically anything can happen in between. With that as a foundation, the open road (or the rehearsal process) became the fertilizer for growth. Whether alone, or with a car full of friends the journey encompasses phases of excitement, boredom, recklessness, insight, complacency, and plenty of plain ol’ fun! This choreographic whirlwind attempts to capture this multi-leveled experience.
